The Room for Smiles idea was born when two sisters wanted to give back. Room for Smiles redecorates the bedrooms of terminally or chronically ill children at no cost to the family. Fund raising and donations make this possible. Diane Froemsdorf Bowles and Susan Froemsdorf Tucker had decorated rooms for years and had seen the faces of healthy children see their new rooms for the first time. They thought it would be great to open their hearts to children who really needed a bright spot in their lives. With doctor's appointments, therapy, meds, equipment, siblings, jobs and too many things to mention, a room makeover is the last thing on a parent's mind. They want everyone to know that 100% of every dime donated to Room for Smiles goes to the children's rooms. They take no salary for anything they do. A happy child is payment enough !

They meet with the family and find out what the child's ideal bedroom would look like. They then come up with a design for the room, clear it with the parents and start gathering what they need to bring the child's fantasy to life. Although they concentrate on children birth to 13, they certainly consider older children. Susan and her husband, David, build specialty items that they need and can't find. They have built things such as: sensory boards, floor beds, canopies, reading benches and headboards. As a seamstress, Diane covers chairs, makes curtains, pillows, bed spreads and any other items that need to be sewn or altered. Each child is different and unique and so are their rooms. These children deal with pain everyday 24/7. They deserve a special place of their own away from sterile white hospitals. A place to rest and recuperate, designed with help from them.
